Dr. Megan Monday
I used to think my forties would be about calming down.
Instead, they’ve been about waking up—the era I lovingly call my feral forties.
After years of EMDR sessions, DBT groups, rape prevention research, and leading a holistic treatment center for suicidal patients, I knew everything about surviving and almost nothing about actually feeling good.
I could walk people back from the edge, but no one had given us a roadmap for what to do with our desire, our rage, our creativity, and our hungry, still-very-much-alive bodies.
My feral forties are where that changed.
This is the decade I stopped auditioning for “good therapist,” “good mother,” and “good wife,” and started listening to the part of me that wanted more: more honesty, more travel, more sex, more beauty, more aliveness. The part that didn’t want to burn it all down—but also refused to stay half-asleep.
Now I help other women in their own feral forties:
Stop gaslighting themselves about what they really want
Integrate trauma work with pleasure, not in opposition to it
Turn midlife from a slow fade-out into a wild, holy reintroduction
